Sophos is software that protects business networks against viruses, spyware, adware, Trojans, spam, and unwanted applications. It was purchased by the JPPSS Technology Department to be used throughout the parish. It is also monitored by JPPSS Technology Department. Every computer in the school should have this software running on it. In order to install it on your classroom computers, please follow the following steps.
Removing Your Old Anti-Virus Programs
If you have Avast, Norton, AVG, or any other anti-virus programs on your computer, you must first remove them. This does not include Spybot or Adaware.
- Make sure that you are in the Administrator Account before you begin.
- Click the Start button
- Click on the Control Panel
- Double click on Add or Remove Programs
- Click on an anti-virus program (Norton, Avast, AVG, or any other anti-virus program)
- Click on Change/Remove (sometimes it just says Remove)
- An Uninstall wizard may prompt you to uninstall the program
- Read the provided prompts and uninstall the program
- If you have multiple anti-virus programs, uninstall the next one.
Installing Sophos
After you have uninstalled all other anti-virus programs, you may install Sophos.
- Open Internet Explorer (or any other web browser that you use)
- Enter 10.40.70.10 in the address bar
- Select your Operating System.
- All new computers currently come with Windows XP
- Very few computers at Dolhonde still use Windows 95/98
- Click on Run
- If the warning “The Publisher could not be verified” comes up, click Run.
- Wait
- Gray shield will appear in the lower right toolbar.
- Green bars should be moving up and down on left side of shield. It’s updating.
- Wait
- When the shield turns blue, the installing and updating is complete.
First Time Virus Scan
After you have finished setting up Sophos, you should run a complete scan of your computer.
- Right click on the Sophos shield icon in your system tray.
- Left click on Open Sophos Anti-Virus
- Left click on Scan my computer
- Follow any instructions that pop up if viruses are found.
Weekly Computer Maintenance
You should do the following on all of your computers on a weekly basis.
- Run a Sophos virus scan.
- Run Disc Cleanup.
- Run Spybot and/or Adaware.
